The Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership (BEL) is a nationally recognised qualification that trains and qualifies lecturers, teachers, youth workers and other members of the community to:
- Lead walking groups in lowland countryside
- Impart the knowledge and skills needed to undertake a day walk
- Have responsibility for the care of others while leading a day walk in lowland countryside
- Plan and lead overnight base and mobile camps.
This qualification sits on Mountain Leader Training national awards matrix. Which can be accessed here.
It is the minimum qualification required by some Operating Authorities for those wanting to train and lead groups in the expedition section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.
The qualification also counts towards the volunteering section of The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
The qualification meets the requirement and covers one of the land-based activities required to Pass the new BTEC Higher National Diploma in Uniformed Public Services (HND) specification at Unit 9 Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions and Unit 10 Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. Both these units are 60 GLH each and the delivery of this qualification for your College or Academy can be integrated by ourselves in to your main programme. The qualification meets the requirement for the BTEC Level 3 in Sports at Unit 10 Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Unit 13 Leadership in Sport. You can access further information for this specification here.
Mountain Leader Training UK include the Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership on the qualification matrix in the National Guidelines for Climbing and Hillwalking Leaders.
Training
Training consists of two blocks of 5-days covering the major aspects of the BEL syllabus and includes a 2-day outdoor specific level 2 first aid qualification. After completion of the training course each candidate must consolidate their logbook to include personal walking and leadership skills in their local community before moving on to the 3-day assessment.

Assessment
Sportsleaders UK recommend a minimum period of two months between attendance on a training course and assessment. Candidates will need to complete a further 8 full days of personal walking PLUS 30 hours of leadership, before joining a assessment course.

Where is my course delivered?
We deliver this programme in and around Dolwyddelan in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park using suitable walking terrain, campsites and in some cases hard accommodation to meet the major aspects of the training.
We can also deliver this programme for your organisation across the UK on dates to suit your needs for up to 50 candidates, and is ideal for Sixth Forms, Colleges and Academies whose students are undertaking a Outdoor Adventure, Uniformed Public service, Public Service (non-uniformed) course or DofE programme.
