ADVANCED NAVIGATION Level 3
Who is this for?
This course is designed for those who
have navigation skills to the levels both covered in the Bronze and Silver NNAS Awards. This course is centred on the village of Dolwyddelan in the heart of Snowdonia north Wales.
From the outset you will be traveling on high mountain terrain. You will need to possess a good level of fitness and experience to get the most from this with a typical course programme being broken down into the following format (subject to weather conditions).
- Day one 8 hours
- Day two 6 hours
Skills covered
You will consolidate all your existing skills
such as relocation, timing,
pacing, aspect of slope & dog legging as well micro & macro
navigation. This course will concentrate on getting you out on the hills from the outset. All the above skills & strategies
are essential in flexible decision making on the British hills & Moorland,
which includes night and/or poor weather navigation skills.
This course also continues
to cover other important areas such as understanding the special physical
demands posed by high mountain or remote terrain, poor weather conditions
and the effects of fatigue and discomfort on decision making.
You will also continue to learn about the effects the environmental conditions can have on the human body. Students may wish to join one of our first aid training programme's to gain further knowledge on how to treat a casualty in remote or wilderness areas.
Course outcome
Once you have completed this programme, you will have experienced all the techniques required to safely navigate on high mountain terrain in the British and Irish hills. A certificate of attendance will be issued by HGMA to all participants with feedback being given to each student on further training and experience.

Two nights basic self catering bunkhouse accommodation, breakfast and lunch's
You may arrive on the night before your course starts between 20.00 & 21.00
Students presenting themselves at this high level are expected to provide their own map and compass for the course duration.
