Bronze Award (level 1)

Who Is this for?

This course is ideal for beginners who have little or no experience to gain knowledge of navigation and is held in Snowdonia north Wales and is centred around the village of Dolwyddelan

Course description

The two day programme 10 hours in duration including the practical assessment phase on second day. A typical programme would be 7 hours instruction on day one with 3 hours practical skills assessment on day two.

Course aims

  • To develop a basic level of using map and compass
  • To apply newly learned skills in the outdoors
  • To allow students to develop a personal training plan
  • To provide an individually tailored learning experience with nationally qualified coaches and instructors

Skills covered

  • Interpret and recognise map scales, symbols and grid references
  • Set or orientate the map to the ground without using a compass
  • Using thumbing and handrailing as techniques to allow you to read your map while walking
  • Recognise the countryside code
  • Recognise some of the basic survival skills covering first aid for hillwalking, clothing , equipment, and nourishment. Students may wish to further their knowledge by attending one of our First Aid training course programme's.

Course outcomes

By the end of your course you should be able to use map and compass with confidence at the level of the award.

The Navigator Bronze Certificate will be awarded to successful candidates on completion of the above course programme.
