Silver Award (Level 2)

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for those who have some navigational experience, such as those covered in the Bronze Award or similar, and who wish to develop new skills and strategies. This course is centred around the village of Dolwyddelan north Wales The course is typically 12 hours in duration with day one being 8 hours long with the practical assessment on day 2 lasting four hours.

Skills covered

During this course, key navigational skills will be taught, including taking accurate bearings using a compass, walking on a bearing, pacing, timings and relocation. Other strategies such as attack points and aiming off will also be covered. You will have the opportunity to try a variety of different compasses, learn how to plan a safe walk and compile a route card. You will also be taught to recognise the effects of fatigue and physical discomfort brought about by navigational activities in open countryside and/or extreme weather conditions.

This will include the recognition of hypothermia and hyperthermia and their effective treatments. In addition we will discuss the importance of equipment and its effects on decision making, as well as basic physiological and psychological considerations.

Students may wish to further expand their emergency care knowledge by attending one of our First Aid training programme's.

As a part of the course you'll also gain an understanding of formal & de facto rules for countryside access.

Course outcomes

By the end of your course you will be able to:-

  • plan routes using a variety of navigational strategies
  • use a compass effectively
  • relocate yourself if the need arises
  • use timing and pacing skills to judge distances
  • understand countryside access issues
  • compile a route card
The Silver Navigator  Certificate will be awarded to successful candidates on completion of the above course

 

What is included in the cost?

All maps and technical aids plus two nights basic self catering bunkhouse accommodation, breakfast and lunch's
